Writing Diverse Characters > Study the Masters

Today we are going to explore Toni Cade Bambara's story War of the Wall from her collection Gorilla My Love.  We are going to identify how the protagonist's [and other characters'] identity is essential to the the 'plot' of the story.

Consider how Bambara uses the intersectional identities  of  characters in the story to entice the reader and enhance the plot.  What do we notice about Bambara's protagonists?

Pay considerable attention to the symbols and illusions  that reflect the characters' identities. How does Bambara employ these symbols and illusions in order to further illustrate the content of this story?

"The Lesson" by Toni Cade Bambara is another great example for exploring intersectional character composition.
